About the SOMA Foundation

Founded in 1978, the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) Foundation began as the philanthropic branch of SOMA. In 2021, the SOMA Foundation joined forces with the American Osteopathic Foundation, the leading philanthropic non-profit supporting osteopathic physicians nationwide. Despite this integration, the SOMA Foundation continues to serve as the dedicated philanthropic branch of SOMA, with the following goals:

⦿ Enhance the welfare and education of osteopathic medical students

⦿ Improve the quality of healthcare delivery worldwide

⦿ Promote the principles and ideals of osteopathic medicine

⦿ Foster communication with other health science students and organizations

⦿ Prepare members to meet the social, moral, and ethical obligations of the osteopathic profession

Today, SOMA represents over 15,000 osteopathic medical students poised to enter the physician workforce. For over 40 years, the SOMA Foundation has been committed to supporting SOMA members through numerous scholarships and grants. Both organizations are run by osteopathic medical students from colleges across the nation, and this vital work is made possible by the generous support of our corporate, institutional, and individual donors.
